~~~Author's Note~~~
I had originally written this a few days ago, but I rewrote it, trying to do something I haven't done....which is a lot, to be honest. But I did, and I like the results. So, please, read it and leave a comment or criticism. Anything would be nice! ^_^ (Though...no flames...unless there's just cause. =P)
A breeze swept through the room, chilling a girl to the bone. She turned around, curious to where the cold breeze was from, as all the windows were shut that cold winter afternoon. She shivered, wondering if it was just her imagination; the others around her seemed to ignore it or didn’t feel it at all.
She turned back around to see what was happening in the front. She was in an after-school club meeting, and one of the officials of the club had started talking. She wasn’t that interested as much of it was already said in past meetings, so she looked down at her desk, a blank canvas for her to doodle on. However, there was something on the desk: a piece of paper.
After reading the paper that was addressed to her, she knew who had written it. The handwriting was just like it. She was to go out into the hallway and meet him, but how? He had left just earlier last year, and although he was not a big part of her life, she did lose a friend. Still, she wondered, how was he here? How did he write this to me without me ever seeing it? She asked her friends, wondering if they had been told to put it on her desk. They were honest and good friends, so she did not suspect them of writing it themselves as a joke. However, they responded that they had no idea where it came from.
Slowly, the girl got up and walked out of the room. The meeting had become rowdy and would not notice her missing. Butterflies and anxiety filled her. It had been so long since she had seen him. How could she? She softly closed the door, facing it as she did. As it shut, she turned her head, seeing him, but shocked nonetheless.
“But…how? Y—”
“Shhh. Please, just listen for now, I don’t have much time,” he said with a soft urgency. He smiled at her, remembering just how beautiful she was almost two years past, even more stunning now. He had really missed her. He reached up to her face, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear; she barely felt his touch.
The two were fairly good friends. They had met in this school four years ago, starting out a new chapter of their lives. From there, came a budding friendship and a growing romance. However, the interest was one-sided, and the boy, who had confessed his feelings for her, was turned down. They stayed friends, for they had many common interests, and one could say, very similar personalities. Even so, he always appeared anxious or nervous around her. It would seem that he did not fully let go of his feelings.
The boy looked around, thankful that only they were in the hallway. “Well,” he started. He had over a year to think about this, about what he was going to say. He quickly went over it in his head; gaining whatever courage he needed to say what was to be said. “This is the last time you’ll be here, isn’t it?” As she nodded in reply, he continued. “Heh. This is your final year here. After these long four years, you’ll be going away, never seeing most of these faces here again,” a melancholy tone present in his voice, “Never seeing me again.”
She was confused by what he said, questioning him. “Why can’t you visit again like now? Where are you going to go?” To say that she was sad would be a bit of an understatement. She thought of her most prominent memories of this place in the last four years, and it left her dispirited. She would have to move on, though a different way than he had, and make a life for herself.
He slowly took her hands into his own, barely being able to keep her hands on top of his. He looked straight into her eyes, deep, shining orbs that reached to her soul. “You know I liked you, right? Even still, I like you. And it’s all right that nothing ever happened between us, I knew I’d get over it someday. I knew I wasn’t going to be that fortunate,” he stated plainly, pain in his clouded eyes.
She started to speak, to reply back to what he said, for he didn’t know, his words had hurt her. Even so, he cut her off from talking with a shake of his head. “Listen, it’s been four years since we met and became friends. It’s also been four years that I liked you and never did I fully pursue that interest. And almost two years ago I had left, my feelings for you just as strong. Now that it’s so close for you to leave here, I can’t help but feel a little empty after those years,” his voice turning into a whisper, and she could hardly hear him without straining her ears. “I just want to ask you of a favor.”
The girl nodded, not knowing what to say. She had a faint clue of what he would ask, knowing him, but she wouldn’t know for certain, yet. “It’s perfectly fine if you refuse. I’ll understand completely,” he paused, gathering up whatever was left of his courage to say all of this. “If you will…May I…may I just have one kiss? Just to seal everything up. Be able to finally move on. Will you?” Though his voice showed little sign of emotion, his clouded eyes were almost asking pleadingly.
Although a shock, she couldn’t have said she didn’t expect it coming. She thought about all he said. About all the times they shared, and the times they missed. Everything they had gone through. What made her decision were his constant, though subtle attempts at her heart over the years. Her thoughts ultimately subsided as she looked at him, giving just the faintest of smiles. “Yes.”
He smiled back at her, noticeably glad in her decision. He took a step closer to her, almost floating, still holding her hands. Leaning in, his lips gently touched hers, closing his eyes. She too closed her eyes as their lips touched, a sensual feeling pervading her senses. However, the feeling ended as they separated. It was a soft, gentle kiss, though filled with four years of emotions.
The boy stepped back, looking content, staring into her eyes, knowing his time with her was about up. “Thank you. For everything,” he whispered, receiving a small “You’re welcome” from her. He closed his eyes as his body started to fade away. “Thank you again. Goodbye…” He opened his eyes one last time, showing her his tear-filled, crystal orbs, releasing everything before disappearing from her view.
She held back a sob, her emotions catching up to her. After a few moments, she slowly composed herself again, recalling everything that just happened. She thought he had really came back, that he felt so real. Though, she knew it could not be possible, he was killed in an accident those almost two years past. The death made little to no effect on the school community, but she did remember feeling very depressed in those days that followed.
She then thought about his last moments here, with her. It was a bittersweet ending for him. She knew that, after all those years, he had finally got what he wanted. A sign of affection from her, of tenderness. He had gotten a kiss, but not how he would have thought. It was a goodbye kiss. She couldn’t help but chuckle at the irony of it all. She looked back to where he had been standing in front of her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as it fell from her head.
A last teardrop fell down her cheek, down to her chin, where it would fall onto the floor where they had both walked together on. It was truly the last time she would ever see him, in this place, this almost sacred place. A place filled with memories of being together with friends, with each other. She walked back into the room, receiving questions from her friends as to where she was. She waved them off, and they backed down. As she sat in that room, in that meeting that was dwindling down, she thought of him again. Staring out of the window, the one closest to her, the one he would sit by, she saw a gust of wind blow a few leaves past the window. Whispering a goodbye, she closed her eyes. She had freed him of his heart’s desire, as she too, just realizing it, freed her of her own.
